My name is Jessica, and my son Legend is my world. He was born with spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, but nothing slows him down, he’s full of life, joy, and determination. Watching him grow has taught me more about strength than I ever thought possible.
Life hasn’t always been easy. Both of my parents struggled with addiction, and I followed the same path when I was just 17. For 11 years, I battled my own addiction until I decided I wanted something better, for myself and for my son. I entered drug court, completed the program, and have now been sober for six years.
When I got clean, I started over from scratch. I got a job at McDonald’s and worked my way up, step by step—until I became a department manager. I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Every day, I try to show Legend that no matter how hard life gets, you can always rise again.
I once had a daughter who was adopted by a family friend, and though I don’t get to see her, that experience made me appreciate motherhood even more. Every moment with Legend is a blessing I don’t take for granted.
When I learned about Habitat for Humanity, I knew it was the opportunity I’d been waiting for. Being chosen as a Habitat partner means everything to us. Owning a home, especially one that’s wheelchair accessible, means more than just walls and a roof. It means safety. It means stability. It means giving Legend something lasting, a place that will always be his.
I’m so ready to start this next chapter. This home will be the foundation for our future, the roots we’ve been waiting to plant!
